Neoxanthin

Neoxanthin is a carotenoid pigment found in plants, macroalgae and microalgae. Isomeric forms of neoxanthin, namely 9'-cis neoxanthin and all-trans-neoxanthin have been found in nature. 9'-cis neoxanthin [9'-cis-(3S,5R,6R,3'S,5'R,6'S)-5',6'-epoxy-6,7-didehydro-5,6,5',6'- tetrahydro-beta, beta-carotene-3,5,3'-triol] is most abundant one. It is the precursor for abscisic acid biosynthesis.

Neoxanthin exhibit a photoprotective role in plants and algae via dissipation of excess energy and alleviate oxidative stress-related damage. The presence of neoxanthin and other xanthophyll pigments in leafy vegetables contribute to their antioxidant property.
