Arachidic Acid


Arachidic acid (Eicosanoic acid) is a long-chain saturated fatty acid of 20 carbon atoms.

Some common vegetable oil (such as olive oil, peanut oil, soybean oil, and coconut oil) contain a small percentage of arachidic acid. A significant source of arachidic acid is rambutan seeds as it contains a substantial level of arachidic acid. The mangosteen seed oil also contains a good amount of arachidic acid. Arachidic acid is also present in fish in trace amounts. Many fungal species have a negligible quantity of arachidic acid, except for some anaerobic rumen fungal isolates.

Biosynthetic conversion of fatty acids, palmitic acid and stearic acid into arachidic acid is by elongase enzyme.

Arachidic acid could be used for the synthesis of nanoparticle-based drug delivery agents. Arachidic acid has excellent thermal properties and is promising as a phase change material for solar applications.
