Erucic Acid

Erucic acid (cis-13-docosenoic acid/C22:1) is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid of 22 carbon atoms, naturally found in rapeseed and mustard oil.

Animal studies demonstrated that consumption of a high amount of erucic acid could cause cardiac damage. So, low erucic acid-containing rapeseed oil, aka canola oil, has been used as edible oil and high erucic acid rapeseed is cultivated for industrial purposes.

Erucic acid is a widely used fatty acid in surfactants, lubricant and polymer industries. Due to the potential applications, erucic acid derivatives, such as erucamide, erucate esters, erucyl alcohol have immense commercial value.

A significant level of erucic acid is reported in the brown alga Dictyota dichotoma.
