Phenylalanine

Phenylalanine (2-amino-3-phenylpropanoic acid) is an alpha-amino acid. It is a non-polar amino acid with a benzyl group. It is an essential amino acid, which acts as a precursor for tyrosine synthesis.

Apart from being a proteogenic amino acid, phenylalanine is involved in the biosynthesis of catecholamines and melanin. Many plant secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolics, are derived from phenylalanine.

High phenylalanine yielding recombinant E. coli shows promise for the industrial-level production of L-phenylalanine. Phenylalanine is also used for the manufacture of aspartame, an artificial sweetener.

Phenylalanine supplementation has been used in the therapeutic management of depression and vitiligo. Studies showed that phenylalanine supplementation influenced the food intake by swine and reduced the stress markers in two aquaculture fish species.

Amino acid analysis of certain Porphyra species revealed a high content of phenylalanine.
