Glycine


Glycine (amino acetic acid) is a non-polar, alpha-amino acid. It serves as one of the building blocks of protein and has a role as a neurotransmitter in the human body.

Glycine is an amino acid of high industrial significance. Glycine is used as a food additive for flavouring and preservation purposes. It is used in the manufacture of various products, including herbicide, pesticide and antiperspirant. Glycine based surfactants such as sodium cocoyl glycinate and potassium cocoyl glycinate can be used in personal care product formulations. Glycine deficiency has been implicated in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and osteoarthritis. Hence, glycine supplementation can have a therapeutic effect for these health conditions. Furthermore, glycine supplementation improves sleep quality and general well-being in humans.

Glycine can be produced by protein hydrolysis and chemical synthesis. However, the chemical route is the preferred mode for the industrial-level production of glycine.

A large quantity of glycine is present in seaweeds such as kelp (Laminariales), laver (Porphyra umbilicalis), and Wakame (Undaria pinnatifida). Spirulina also contains glycine in high concentrations.
