Chlorophyll-b

Chlorophyll b is the class of chlorophyll pigment present in higher plants, green macroalgae and cyanobacteria. In cyanobacteria, chlorophyll b could be the predominant photosynthetic pigment in photosystem II.

The structural difference between chlorophyll a and b is the presence of the aldehyde group at the porphyrin ring structure.

In terrestrial plants, chlorophyll b that bound to antenna proteins act in a complementary manner to chlorophyll a in the absorption of light of broader wavelength, thus leading to efficient absorption of solar radiation. Maximal absorption of light by chlorophyll b happens at 626 nm and 392 nm.

Chlorophyll b content in the plant influences plant signalling related to plant growth and abscisic acid biosynthesis.

Fine quality green tea production requires the tea plants to be grown under shade. Measuring chlorophyll a and b can be used to choose the right shading processes for green tea leaves production. Similarly, the shading process for the effective intercropping system can be evaluated by quantifying chlorophyll a and b content in the crops.
