Lysine

Lysine (2,6-Diaminohexanoic acid) is a polar, alpha-amino acid. It has a positive-charged primary amine group making it a basic amino acid. It is an essential amino acid for humans.

Besides being an amino acid of significant physiological and methanolic roles, lysine is involved in building collagen structure and biosynthesis of carnitine. Industrially, L-lysine is produced by fermentation using bacteria, Brevibacterium lactofermentum or Brevibacterium flavum.

Oral administration of L- lysine can help people with anxiety and anxiety-induced intestinal dysfunction. Its therapeutic use to treat herpes simplex virus caused lesions needs further study due to the lack of evidence. Zinc and L-lysine supplementation may help to strengthen immunity in the elderly. Studies showed that lysine deficiency could cause hair loss.

Lysine is a limiting amino acid in grains. Hence, lysine is added to grain-based feeds to improve their nutritional quality for use in animal husbandry. Lysine supplementation can also be used to increase muscle growth in swine.

Seaweeds such as Acanthophora spicifera and Ulva fasciata contain a relatively high concentration of lysine.
