Caprylic Acid

Caprylic acid is a medium-chain saturated fatty acid of 8 carbon atoms. Among vegetable oils, coconut oil contains a relatively high amount of caprylic acid, followed by palm kernel oil. In general, the caprylic acid content in coconut oil and palm kernel oil ranges around 7-8% and 3-4% of total fatty acids, respectively.

Caprylic acid and its derivatives have a significant industrial value as they are used as additives in perfumes, cleansers, cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations. Owing to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, caprylic acid is used as an active ingredient in disinfectants.

Caprylic acid also exhibits remarkable anti-inflammatory effects. Hence, a diet rich in caprylic acid might help people with chronic inflammatory diseases. In addition, caprylic acid is the constituent of medium-chain triglycerides oil extracted from coconut oil, which is used as an athletic performance enhancer and keto diet supplement.
