Lauric Acid

Lauric acid (dodecanoic acid) is a saturated medium-chain fatty acid of 12 carbon atoms. It is the most abundant fatty acid in coconut oil and palm kernel oil.

Lauric acid has strong antimicrobial activity and could treat skin ailments such as acne and dandruff. Dietary lauric acid is readily metabolized to provide energy. So lauric acid-rich medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) extracted from coconut oil is used as a nutritional supplement during the ketogenic diet. Since lauric acid increases lipolysis, it might promote weight loss. Lauric acid and its salts such as sodium laurate, calcium laurate, potassium laurate and magnesium laurate have been used in food, cosmetic, and personal care industries. Lauric acid is the starting material for the synthesis of sodium lauryl sulphate, an anionic surfactant.

The lauric acid content in seaweeds varies with species and usually present in trace amounts.
