UNRAVEL Kick Off

Bioeconomy Post-Doc Project Manager Position at Celignis

Background

Do you want to apply your scientific and project management expertise to be part of a rapidly expanding startup that is making a real difference in advancing the bioeconomy in Ireland and overseas?

Would you like to work on a collaborative research project featuring some of the brightest minds and top-class institutions in Europe?

Celignis is a pioneering SME that was spun-out from state-of-the art research undertaken by its founder and CEO Dr Daniel Hayes, as part of his PhD at the University of Limerick. Since its launch Celignis has rapidly grown to be the leading provider of compositional analysis services to stakeholders in the bioeconomy and biomass valorisation industries.

Celignis continues to work at the cutting edge of science through its involvement in a number of high-profile, top-quality collaborative research projects. One such project is UNRAVEL, funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme and the Biomass Based Industries Joint Undertaking, which started in June 2018. The UNRAVEL consortium are working together to develop a biomass pre-treatment process that could revolutionise the biorefining industry.

Celignis plays a key role in the project by optimising the pre-extraction part of the pre-treatment. If we get this right then we will hold the key to getting much greater value from biomass, fully valorising all sections of the plant, so enabling the pre-treatment to be a commercially attractive process. This could lead to biorefineries based on the technology spreading across Europe and the World.

We are excited and motivated by the potential of the UNRAVEL project and our role in it and we are looking for a similarly enthused person to lead our involvement in it.

Requirements

This will be a challenging but highly rewarding role. You will be working on a research project that was in the top 5% of proposals submitted in 2017 and collaborating with world-leading partners covering a number of research institutions, universities, SMEs and large industrial parties.

The chosen candidate should be motivated to not only achieve the deliverables and milestones required of Celignis within the project but to exceed the project’s KPIs and help to develop a revolutionary technology.

lf you have previous experience in managing and implementing the technical tasks of European research projects, as well as in preparing and submitting project deliverables and reports then this job is perfect for you. However, we will also consider you even if you do not have this specific experience providing you have a desire and the confidence to deliver repeatedly.

The job involves the use of various types of laboratory equipment to extract and pre-treat biomass followed by the use of an array of analytical devices (e.g. GC/MS, LC, IC, ICP) to analyse the process outputs. Experience with these items of equipment would be a bonus and the candidate should not be afraid of getting intimate with such equipment when they may be misbehaving.

Celignis also has a PhD student working on the UNRAVEL project. The chosen candidate will be responsible for the motivation and management of this student, so a PhD in a relevant discipline will be needed.

Benefits

You'll be part of a fantastic team of seven, reporting to our CEO, and you'll also become a truly valued member of the UNRAVEL consortium. We have great plans for the future of Celignis and you have the chance to be part of making these dreams a reality. Our management structure at Celignis is flat and everyone has a voice in the development of the company.

The position has an attractive salary, reflecting the importance of your role in the project and the level of expertise you will bring to Celignis.

We recently relocated to a larger premises in a Technology Park close to the University of Limerick (voted Ireland’s best university for 2018) and we have close ties to the university through our PhD student and many past and ongoing collaborations. For those items of our array of state-of-the-art analytical equipment with which you do not currently have experience-in we will provide in-house training and support. You will also see first-hand how scientific advances can lead to real exploitable commercial results, both at Celignis and within the UNRAVEL project.
