    Methionine

Methionine (2-amino-4-(methylthio) butanoic acid) is a non-polar, alpha-amino acid. It is a sulphur containing essential amino acid. Apart from its role in metabolism and immunity, it acts as a precursor for many biologically important molecules such as s-adenosyl methionine, carnitine, taurine, and glutathione.

Impaired methionine metabolism is implicated in multiple sclerosis. Hair keratin damage is associated with the demethylation of methionine in keratin.

Methionine is commercially synthesized through chemical routes. It is used for the fortification of soy-based infant formula and as an ingredient in hair and skincare formulations. Dietary methionine level influences the milk protein synthesis in dairy cows and goats.

Generally, seaweed contains a low level of methionine.
