    Isoleucine

Isoleucine ((23,3s)-2-amino-3-methylpentanoic acid) is an alpha-amino acid. It is a non-polar and branched amino acid.

Isoleucine is an essential amino acid for humans. It plays a crucial role in glucose consumption, protein metabolism and maintaining good immunity and neurological function. Many branched-chain amino acids supplements with isoleucine claiming to improve athletic performance and increasing muscle mass are available in the market.

E. coli and Corynebacterium glutamicum strains have been reported as the best sources for the commercial-level production of isoleucine.

Isoleucine is an EU-approved feed additive for farm animals. Isoleucine supplementation may be beneficial for treating rotavirus infection in young piglets and infants.

The seaweed Sargassum weightii contain protein rich in essential amino acids, including isoleucine. Hence, it can be a cost-effective alternative protein source for animal feed purposes.
